And Give Us Thankful Hearts

I received a message.. “Do you remember what Daddy said for Grace?”

MY mind started reeling. Repeating it over in my head.. Again and again. Was it this? Wait, was it that?

Then I finally got it. As close as we can remember. He’s in heaven now. We are left with memories.

We are thankful for the memories. A father who said grace before each meal. I often wondered why it was the same prayer. Now, I’m so glad it was. Repetition drives it deep into our minds and hearts.

My husband was impacted by a line in the prayer. He said that our Daddy must have really had a lot to be thankful for and knew it because Daddy always said : “And give us thankful hearts for all those our many blessings.” I’m still not sure if it was thankful or grateful. It’s crazy how the smallest things matter now.

Today, on my family’s first Thanksgiving with Daddy in Heaven and the rest of us here, I’m choosing to be Thankful for all those our many blessings. Daddy taught us that.

So, here is Daddy’s “Grace” as good as I can remember:

(Bless this food to the nourishment of our bodies and our bodies to thy service. And give us thankful hearts for all those our many blessings.
Amen.)

I may not remember it all.. Perfectly.. But what I do remember is this: Daddy was thankful. He loved life. He didn’t waste a single moment of his life. He was selfless and his hearts desire was to never be able to “say no to those who need and ask for help.”

I’m choosing thankfulness today and every single day.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I love you! Most importantly, JESUS loves you. He commands us as CHRISTIANS to give thanks in all circumstances. It’s not a little suggestion.. It’s a command.

Truth is, you can’t give thanks and not be filled with joy at the same time. Try it.

RELEVANT SCRIPTURE

1 Thessalonians 5:18 ~ Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

REFLECTION

Today I am thankful for:

1) The grace and mercy that Jesus shows me.

2) A legacy of a father who modeled thankfulness and a true heart for Jesus by his actions.

3) A husband who loves Jesus and loves me.

4) Our daughters. They make my heart swell.

5) My Momma…she models The Proverbs 31 woman. She’s my momma and my friend.

6)  All of our family…sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins.

7) My husband’s parents..who have always been so good to me and treat me like their own. They both Love The LORD so much and model Jesus to everyone.

8) Friends…so many who bless me in so many ways. Near and far, old and new. I am blessed.

9) My church family..Missions..

10) That Jesus would choose an ordinary person like me as HIS vessel for serving.

Thankful Thursday

Yesterday was Thursday.. Obviously. 💁

However, Today is November 1st.

Love that so many join in on the 30 days of thanks in November. So let’s get started today! If you don’t post it on social media, it’s ok! Write it in your journal! Or, at supper time go around the table and share something you are thankful for each day.

The more you practice GIVING THANKS, the more likely you are to get in the habit of Giving Thanks daily. Not just on Thankful Thursdays or in November. 😊

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. (Psalms 136:1 NLT)

I’m thankful for my husband who is also the best friend I’ve ever had and loves me at my worst and my best.

I’m thankful for our two daughters who make us laugh every single day, and who shine Jesus.

I’m thankful for naps. 😊

I hope you all have a fabulous Friday and wonderful weekend! What one thing are you most thankful for today? Write it down.. Then you can look back and see your blessings at any time.

Until Next Time,

HEATHER

It is THURSDAY again!!!! Thankful Thursday

Colossians 3 :15 ~ Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

I am a little late getting this post out today…but better late than never! 🙂

Today’s post is a short and to the point post. Those are the best anyways.

I just wanted to share with you some of my THANKFUL moments from this week, and I hope you will share yours too!

I love to laugh. I love to make others laugh. I love to hear laughter. In my opinion, laughter truly heals. That being said, I am SO THANKFUL for the LAUGHS this week!

I am also thankful for opportunities that God is showing to me. So excited to see where God leads me next. So awesome to see God work. So awesome that HE chooses to use the ordinary.

Last but not least, I am extremely thankful for the people who God sends to encourage me. They may never know just how much their encouragement means… Right when I feel like throwing in the towel, God sends someone with a message of encouragement. It’s that obedience that can make a huge difference in someone’s life. 🙂

Hebrews 10:25 ~ Let us not give up meeting together, as some of you are doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

God didn’t put us here to do life alone. We need each other. For laughter, for opportunities to serve, and for encouragement.

What THREE things are YOU most thankful for this week? Like really… I want to know! 🙂

Until Next Time,

Thankful Thursday ~ October 17th 2013

A wise person once said:

” Every day may not be good….but there is something good in every day. “

It is only 6 WEEKS until Thanksgiving! Here in South Georgia the extremely hot days have turned into 80s on some days. That’s better than 100 though! Leaves are falling. The skies are looking more fall like. There’s a slight breeze on most days. Fall decorations are going up outside of homes. Fall is in the air. Even if the air is still a bit warm and humid. 🙂

Time to do the weekly Thankful Thursday posts again!

Thanks Giving should happen daily. There is no way to be sad while expressing gratitude. There is JOY to be found in giving thanks.

Everybody has something that they can be thankful for. I’m asking you to think of your top 3 things. If we are unable to think of anything then we have a serious reality problem.

Have you heard of the saying: “If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.” ?

See, everyone has STUFF. But, everyone has some good STUFF too!

It’s a matter of perspective. How we choose to look at life. Life is a gift. Each day is a gift…each breath is a miracle. That in itself is something to be thankful for.

The next time you are feeling grumpy or aggravated ask yourself why? Could it be that you have chosen to look at things negatively? Could it be that you haven’t thanked God for anything that day?

God tells us to GIVE THANKS IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES. Why do you suppose He commands that of us?

1 Thessalonians 5:18 ~ Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Maybe when we THANK God in the hard times and even for the hard times…He is pleased and it shows our trust and faith in Him. Faith that He will and can if He so chooses…make all things work together for good for those who are the called, according to HIS purpose. He wants us to trust Him. AND….it plainly says that “this is God’s will for you”.

Some days it is easier and more natural to give thanks. Have you ever given thanks when you didn’t like the situation? No, I don’t mean FAKE thanks. But…thanking God for being there for you when you were not happy. Telling HIM that you don’t understand but you do trust HIM. Thanking God when you were sad or disappointed.

How? By trusting HIM.  Thanking HIM for never abandoning you. He will never abandon HIS children.

Psalm 37:28a ~ For the Lord loves justice, and he will never abandon the godly.

That is something to be thankful for.

Now for my list!

Here are 3 things that I am THANKFUL for today:

1) A husband that loves others with compassion and treats all people with the love of Jesus and equally. So proud to be his wife.

2) Grace from God and family and friends. For loving me when I least deserve it. For loving me when I am unloveable.

3) Family devotions 2 nights in a row. One led entirely by our oldest daughter (picking the topic, verses, etc.. and sharing) and one last night by my husband.

What 3 things are YOU thankful for today?

Share them by replying to this post…or write them in your journal.

Giving thanks is contagious and addictive. A GOOD thing to be addicted to!

Blessings my friends!

Give Thanks or Complain ~ Thankful Thursdays

188457_10200873146496901_77136796_n

Ephesians 5:20 ~ And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Give THANKS for EVERYTHING? Even when the kids are fussing? When the puppy (who is 18 months old) is still tearing things up on a daily basis? When the kids talk back? Give THANKS?

Well….that’s what HE said.

Give THANKS for EVERYTHING.

Other than the FACT that it is a COMMAND….

Maybe it is because when we give thanks we are believing that HE can bring good from anything.

Maybe the reason is because thanksgiving chooses to see the good in even the worst of situations.

Maybe it’s because GIVING THANKS brings joy and hope and belief that GOD IS GOOD and HE really will take care of everything.

Our circumstances are always changing. For some…our days are up and down..because of multiple people in our household whose circumstances change too. This leaves EACH ONE OF US with the choice…to Give Thanks or to COMPLAIN.

There is ONE THING that never ever changes for believers..well..at least one..

~ GOD NEVER LOVES US MORE OR LESS THAN HE DOES AT THIS VERY MOMENT ~

Hebrews 13:8 ~ Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

1 Chronicles 16:34 ~ Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.

So…. TODAY… I am choosing to give thanks for:

1) My children…even on the days that I want to pull my hair out…because..They are healthy..precious..a gift from God..and I have them here with me still.. Oh how I love my girls…So, this means being thankful even on the days that parenting is tough.

2) Cloudy and rainy “spring break” days…because…they give us down time…time together in our home..time is precious..

3) Tough times…times and situations that I don’t always understand..times when I am feeling hurt and confused..because honestly..it is in those times when I cling to GOD even more and grow…

4) The way God speaks to me..in HIS time..through fellow believers…when they confirm an answer to a question that I had asked of my Father God..HE is so faithful….

See, giving THANKS to GOD doesn’t deny that what you are feeling or have experienced may be awful or that your heart may hurt… No, giving thanks is trusting HIM to lift you up and that HE can and will take care of you. Giving THANKS when you are hurting is an act of love to GOD…it is saying: “God, I trust you and I know that YOU have already won and that the enemy has NO power over me as your child.”

What are you going to thank GOD for today? Not just the easy things..

            Until Next Time,

Thankful Thursdays ~ March 21st

img_3965-11.jpg

I decided to start posting these “Thankful Thursdays” again. See, it is easy to get out of the habit of practicing thanksgiving, and I need little reminders from time to time. Maybe you do as well.

While doing one of my morning daily devotions, One Thousand Gifts Devotional by Ann Voskamp, I just really became convicted of my lack of daily thanksgiving. I mean, it’s easy to give thanks in the exciting and good things that occur on a day to day basis. Yet, we are commanded to give thanks for the not so good stuff too.

Believe it or not, I actually found myself thanking God today for the not so great things that I face …and it wasn’t that hard after all. When we thank HIM for the yuck, we realize that HE is greater than any circumstance that we may face. We are truly TRUSTING God to be enough. And, isn’t HE really enough?

These words in my devotion today really stuck out to me:

I’m not sure how my life stands. How my inner and outer walls stand, how I make a home. Unless we make it a habit to give thanks, we habitually give our family grief. Unless we consistently speak praise, we consistently speak poison. Unless we are intentional about giving God glory throughout the day, our days unintentionally give way to grumbling. ~ Ann Voskamp (One Thousand Gifts Devotional..Devo 40)

It takes being intentional in order to bring God glory. Gratitude must be continuous. Our words are either pleasant or like poison. POISON. Convicted.

Matthew 12:35-37 really hit home this morning..and really made me want to be more intentional about my giving of thanks to God. Read it and really think on it…This is JESUS talking..

Matthew 12:35-37 (NLT) ~ “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgement day for every idle word you speak. The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”

May our words be words of grace…and thanksgiving..bringing glory to God. May we always give thanks in everything..even the yuck. May we think before we speak..and not use words carelessly.

I am thankful for the sweet friends that God has blessed me with..who send me random messages and let me know that they love me and are praying for me. I am thankful for the gift of prayer and that I can pray for others and talk to God anytime and anywhere. I am thankful for healthy children.

What are some things that you are thankful for today?

Colossians 4:2 ~ Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

              Until Next Time,

Slow Down

SLOW DOWN...or you'll miss the beauty around you. ~HD
SLOW DOWN…or you’ll miss the beauty around you. ~HD

Psalm 90:12 ~ Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom

There are times when I can be so impatient with my husband and daughters..especially our youngest. She’s the one who is most like him. I find myself rushing our girls. Hurry up. Come on. Let’s go. RIGHT now.

Time. It’s a precious commodity. Why do I rush it so?

I savor each moment with them. I love them so. Yet, I rush..rush…rush..

I don’t want the things that my children to remember about their childhood to be a bunch of “rush”. Now, mind you, some of the time, it is their fault for lagging behind. BUT, I still can choose to not let “time” make me frazzled. I can choose to live at a more relaxed pace. To be easygoing and “come what may”, when we are running behind.

I want to not live a “hurried” life.

Because…when we hurry..we miss things.

I don’t want to miss a thing.

In my devotion that I am doing daily, Ann Voskamp writes these thought-provoking truths:

   “Doesn’t all the hurry make us hurt? Slow never killed time. It’s the rushing and racing, the trying to catch up, this is what kills time – ourselves. WHY IN THE WORLD DO WE KEEP WOUNDING OURSELVES? Life is not an emergency.” { DEVOTION 11 ~ One Thousand Gifts Devotional, Ann Voskamp}

Might you, too, need to slow down?

Living life at a slower pace can really be a good thing.( Shhhhh. Don’t tell my kids and husband that. 🙂 )

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” ~ Oscar Wilde
